Course Description

The Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) Work-Study Elective (WSE) is a collaboration between SMU and organisations in the public and private sectors that are driving innovation and/or entrepreneurial initiatives. This programme offers students the opportunity to undertake a 5-month extended internship, where they will contribute to real-world innovation and venture creation efforts.With an extended internship timeframe, students will be immersed in the partner organisation’s innovation processes, take on meaningful responsibilities, and develop entrepreneurial mindsets and skills such as opportunity recognition, creative problem-solving, lean experimentation, and agile execution. Overall, the WSE will equip students with practical knowledge and transferable skills to thrive in innovation-focused or entrepreneurial careers.The I&E WSE will take place locally, with students interning for at least four days each week and attending classes on campus up to one day a week. The internship duration will typically span a school term (e.g., August to December for Term 1 or January to May for Term 2).Students are strongly recommended to apply for the WSE only after their first year.

Course Learning Outcomes

Through this work-study elective, students will:

  • Deepen their understanding of the innovation and entrepreneurship landscape in Singapore and beyond, including the roles of start-ups, corporates, and ecosystem enablers.

  • Gain hands-on experience in applying concepts and tools from entrepreneurship and innovation modules.

  • Identify opportunities or challenges faced organisation and propose creative, viable solutions—grounded in user insights, experimentation, and iterative development.

  • Deepen their insights of that industry and understand levers for change within the organisation and in the industry
